Baxter State Park is a wilderness and forest area of 209,501 acres. The Park is a paradise for nature enthusiasts with an abundance of natural diversity. The Park was intended by Baxter to be "available for those who love nature and are willing to walk and make an effort to get close to nature." Our hiking trails are very primitive, with many rocks and roots, even on the flattest terrain. Visitors should have sturdy footwear and be prepared for obstacles including boulders and stream crossings. Please consult an up to date map for elevation gains or stream crossings on trails. Please note: no ADA modifications have been made on our wilderness trails, they are maintained in a natural state as a wilderness. We hope you enjoy the challenges presented by the Park trails as you explore the wilderness as Percival Baxter envisioned it.
There are 46 mountain peaks and ridges, 18 of which exceed an elevation of 3,000 feet, the highest being Baxter Peak at 5,267 feet. The park maintains about 200 miles of trails. The information contained in this brief introduction to the Park is not adequate for extended hiking or climbing. Guides and maps give detailed information and will help make your trip a safe and enjoyable one. For your own safety, do not leave the Park Tote road without a detailed map of the area to be traversed. Maps are sold at Campgrounds, Millinocket Headquarters, the Visitor Center at Togue Pond, and by mailing in or calling Millinocket Headquarters.
